Another Day Another Tor Attack

by /u/Paris A · 41 votes · 3 months ago

I seems like we are going to need to burn some more money. Yet again Dread/Recon is receiving a large DDOS attack which is killing the guard nodes on our fronts. These attacks are in conjunction with other attacks on the Tor network. If you look on the torproject performance metrics you will see a consistent rise on the time it takes to complete average requests. Timeouts and failures are becoming more common getting at times over 10% of all connections failing to build.

Since about a week ago guard nodes are dying HARD (the metrics lag behind a week or so). Even the customized high powered guard nodes run by me has required IP rate blocking to just stay up and active (thanks to Toralf Förster for his torutils tools that saved me time).

i2p is up and working just fine. If you really need to get on Dread just use i2p. Premium members can use the private Tor mirror URL (located in the /d/lounge) which is stable and full speed as well.

Ads will yet again be extended after this DDOS attack is taken care of. The Tor network is starting to deteriorate quickly so expect occasional downtime and inaccessibility. Grab a new identity if you get timeout issues on Dread. If you try, it might take a couple minutes, you should still be able to access Dread. After you have successfully built a connection generally it should be solid for 10 minutes time until you need to build another one. POW is coming and this probably is a last ditched attemptof an DDOSER to extort darknet site admins. Either that or Russia and Iran str really putting the strain on the Tor network trying to prevent information exchange outside their borders. Needless to say, this problem is still here today.

Edit (14): Just doing some new tests, writing some new code, C is a shit unsafe language which deserves to die a painful death, and fucking the DDOSER's mom. If the new design goes well we should be up soon. If not I got a backup design. If that fails too. There is another design after that. At the end of this I'm going to be writing a full post about what admins should do. I'll also release an updated onionbalance binary that I hope will greatly remove a lot of the hacking nature of load balancing on Tor.

dDoS is the digital equivalent of an unwanted gang rape.

I got into this wormhole researching pornographic terms. I really wish I was of conscious adult age during the period of 1969 - 1984. That was the golden age of porn. Imagine living in a time when sexually explicit films got positive attention from mainstream commercial cinemas? That seems like a much more relaxed time to live vs. now. The world is so uptight, like when people become famous and enjoy themselves sexually, they get called out for misbehaving. What the fuck do you do when you get showered in hot pussy after being broke for 15 years grinding it out while honing your craft. Everyone should be allowed to act sexually without getting harsh judgement.

Sorry, I'm super high right now not sure where that came from.... fuckin ddos sucks man... :/

Edit - Been rockin' the i2p and it's been solid, it's the primary channel now.

/u/mischka · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

i dunno. i'd rather the ddos.

/u/zexdac · 5 votes · 3 months ago · Link

I highly recommend giving i2p a try connecting to Dread.

/u/chud6inkster · 4 votes · 3 months ago · Link

Someday.. I will wrap my head around it. lol.

/u/footsteps · 2 votes · 3 months ago · Link

why not set out how you personally connect via i2p to add more to your recommendation?

/u/Pre_Vend_Study P · 3 votes · 3 months ago · Link

I don't know why this guy is posting the overview and daemon implementation details.

Download and install i2p from https://geti2p.net/en/

Start it from one of the shortcuts

Open your browser and set the HTTP and HTTPS proxy settings to 127.0.0.1 port 4444 (Google it if you don't know how, but it's in your browser settings)

Go to http://127.0.0.1:7657 in your browser and do the setup

Navigate to the .i2p link and enjoy. i2p won't connect to https:// so if it has the s in the link, change it to http.

* sometimes it takes a couple minutes for the network to get setup and working once you start it. VPN is recommended but not required - Perfect Privacy or anything from this page https://restoreprivacy.com/vpn/no-logs/

Once you're finished, change your proxy settings back to no proxy.

/u/MrMiggles · 2 votes · 3 months ago · Link

I like to use i2p + LibreFox. It is a more secure version of Firefox. I'd also install the NoScript extension.

/u/mischka · 2 votes · 3 months ago · Link

I would love it if I2P was a Tails option again.

/u/MrMiggles · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

Same. In my experience using i2p has been consistently faster and stable than Tor. And it is supposed to be more secure.

/u/foobazzly · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

Per the advice here I setup i2p via docker, using an ssh tunnel from the host machine to the server running i2p docker. Works like a charm and much more reliable and faster. I'm using LibreWolf browser with javascript manually disabled.

/u/newbieforever2018 ☆Cares About Noobs☆ · 3 votes · 3 months ago · Link

I must say that I was a skeptic and I definitely don't know how the user safety of i2p compares to Tor but nonetheless I am a convert and i2p works flawlessly on dread. For all who are frustrated by the inability to access dread I highly suggest that you take i2p for a test drive.

Pro life tip: Use the portable version and you won't totally screw up your proxy settings like I did the first try with the install method.

/u/EvilNet · 2 votes · 3 months ago · Link

But why attack dread ? More importantly, who would ever do it ? I don't think it's law enforcement because they would be infiltrating and certainly not conducting a DoS/DDoS attack

There have been op-ed articles about Russia resorting to potential cyberattacks due to how poorly their troops are performing on the ground.

Shout out to Volodymyr Zelenskyy for having the balls to announce in Russian language that Putin should give Japan back the islands that Russia currently occupies.

No respect 'til he has the balls to tell Israel to give back the Golan Heights and the other half of the West Bank. But no, he has an ethnic interest in THAT territory.

Ukraine has history in WW2 of picking the wrong side and doing things to Russians and Poles. The nationalism in Ukraine is more civil than ethnocentric in some ways, the US/EU coup that put Zelensky in power precipitated proactive language exclusion policies towards Russian-speaking and Romanian-speaking Ukrainian citizens, and an overt pretext to Ukrainian irredentism, which is ironic, given that this prompted Russian irredentism, and the separatism in Russian-speaking regions, which undermines the notion that the conflict in Ukraine is somehow a "Russian invasion": it isn't.

The civil war in Ukraine is more like the conflict in Yugoslavia, with the Russian playing the role of Serbs, and the Ukrainians the role of Croats.

The "goodies", the Croats, also have a history of supporting the wrong side in WW2 and committing atrocities too, but then also of joining the EU and NATO. There seems to be a pattern emerging, confirmed by the US bombing of the Nordstream pipeline, and the NATO bombing of the Crimean bridge.

/u/ddosfighter · 0 votes · 2 months ago · Link

Thank you for the lolz I got from this post. The Russian brain washing is so bad it resembles satire.

"US/EU coup?" Didn't Russia attempt to hack the elections computers for Ukraine and publicly announce on state television, before the actual results of the Ukrainian election were announced, that an actual Neo-Nazis was elected to office? Which country was attempting a coup, as rationale for an invasion of Ukraine?

Typical Russian projecting. Literally projecting onto other countries what Russia tried and failed to do.

"'Russian invasion': it isn't" lol, whose tanks were those who drove half way to Kiev and turned around because they failed to take the city? The tanks did not belong to Ukraine, so who do those tanks belong to? If the tanks rolling in are Russian tanks manned by Russians, it's comical to call the Russian invasion a civil war.

"There seems to be a pattern emerging, confirmed by the US bombing of the Nordstream pipeline, and the NATO bombing of the Crimean bridge."

What would the US, NATO or anyone in the EU gain from bombing the Nordstream pipeline, a pipeline that was not in use at the time of the bombing? Nothing. What would does Russia gain, hopefully for them a rise in oil and natural gas prices, to help finance the failing war in Ukraine.

"Bombing of the crimean bridge," lol, if NATO wanted to do some actual damage, NATO would not bomb the Crimean bridge. All NATO has to do is put 20 F-22 Raptors on the NATO borders of Russia and Putin would shit his pants.

/u/footsteps · 1 votes · 2 months ago · Link

"LMFAO" at your feigned "loz"

No.

Typical anti-Russian projecting. Literally projecting onto Russia what anti-Russian forces tried and succeeded in doing.

Ukraine forces have been attacking the Ukrainian Russians in the Donbas for years, bombarding them and finally they broke away and formed countries, and invited Russian forces to come and defend them.

This is not very different from what happened in places like Cyprus, Kosovo, Bosnia, Nagorno-Karabakh, etc...

as an example:

NYT 2014 h t t p s :/ / w w w . n y t i m e s . c o m/2014/10/21/world/ukraine-used-cluster-bombs-report-charges.html

"What would the US, NATO or anyone in the EU gain from bombing the Nordstream pipeline, a pipeline that was not in use at the time of the bombing?"

Very obviously removing Russian leverage over the German industrial sector that relied on Russian energy for about 40% of its cheap inputs for its economy model, and the US gaining increased sales of energy to the EU, something the US has been banging on about for years.

2014 h t t p s : / / w w w . y o u t u b e . c o m /watch?v=Qiugi-X0rGc

2004 h t t p s : / / w w w . r e s i l i e n c e . o r g/stories/2004-12-07/europe-growing-dependent-russian-energy-iea/

If you have worked at sea with the kind of equipment that is needed to do that, you would realise that it is ridiculously impractical for Russia to sail all the way down to Bornholm, an area full of NATO warships and infrastructure, and attempt to lower ROVs down 70m-80m to plant huge bombs and not be detected.

Meanwhile, earlier this year, that's exactly what NATO forces were simulating:

Russia cannot enter the area where the pipes were destroyed, undetected:

h t t p s : / / w w w . n a t o . i n t /cps/en/natohq/news_209252.htm

h t t p s : / / a c . n a t o . i n t /archive/2022/allied-air-forces-conduct-regular-training-drills-in-baltic-sea-region

h t t p s : / / s f n . n a t o . i n t/newsroom/news-archive/2022/baltops-22--the-premier-baltic-sea-maritime-exercise--concludes-in-kiel

these included vessels with underwater explosives expertise and capability.

how are the Russians going to get even one 100m subsea construction vessel to sit above the pipes at Bornholm, and lower bombs down that are too heavy for divers, and at a depth that is to great for divers to work at? Russian ships can't even get insurance...

h t t p s : / / lloydslist.maritimeintelligence .informa. c o m/LL1141179/Russia-sanctions-prove-challenging-for-maritime-insurance

or do you think the Russians have a fleet of underwater magic tanks like off Aquaman?

"

"Bombing of the crimean bridge," lol, if NATO wanted to do some actual damage, NATO would not bomb the Crimean bridge. All NATO has to do is put 20 F-22 Raptors on the NATO borders of Russia and Putin would shit his pants."

You don't really understand how supply chains work do you?

Putting F-22 raptors would prompt a nuclear escalation, then who will be shitting their pants?

/u/ddosfighter · 1 votes · 2 months ago · Link

"Typical anti-Russian projecting. Literally projecting onto Russia what anti-Russian forces tried and succeeded in doing."

Give some evidence to back your claim. You have none, cited none, speaking in conclusory terms without any substance. You also never addressed my claims that Russian state television stated a neo-nazi won the Ukrainian election before Ukraine ever announced a winner or that Russian malware was literally found and removed from the machines doing the vote tallying in Ukraine.

https://www.csmonitor.com/World/Passcode/2014/0617/Ukraine-election-narrowly-avoided-wanton-destruction-from-hackers

"Ukraine forces have been attacking the Ukrainian Russians in the Donbas for years, bombarding them and finally they broke away and formed countries, and invited Russian forces to come and defend them."

So you are claiming that ethnic Russians were being attacked under Viktor Yanukovych, a pro-Russian president in eastern Ukraine and eastern Ukraine only broke away from the rest of Ukraine after Viktor Yanukovych fled to Russia? lol, nice one comedian.

Your Times article is about after the war broke out in eastern Ukraine, not before, lol. You could write the same thing about Germans attacking the Russians after they invaded eastern Germany in 1945.

"Very obviously removing Russian leverage over the German industrial sector that relied on Russian energy for about 40% of its cheap inputs for its economy model, and the US gaining increased sales of energy to the EU, something the US has been banging on about for years."

European reliance on a non-friendly country for energy for decades has always been a strategic blunder of which Putin was trying to take advantage of. Of all of the dumb things that Trump said, one of the logical things he did point out was that Germany was relying on a non-friendly nation for most of their energy.

"or do you think the Russians have a fleet of underwater magic tanks like off Aquaman?"

C'mon man, if freaking James Cameron, an individual person, can send a robot down to the Titanic 20 years ago, you want the rest of the world to believe the Russian government could not build or buy a robot possible of placing a charge on a pipeline? lol, who said anything about divers? We live a world where a substantial amount of war is being conducted using drones, who said anything about divers?

It's a well known the Iranian drones being used by Russia in Ukraine are sourced from parts made by western countries and smuggled into Iran and you want me to believe Russia could not smuggle an underwater robot to place bombs? Your insurance comments are literally irrelevant to the conversation, when nation states are involved. I mean it's not like the Moskva had insurance on it, but maybe it should have.

"You don't really understand how supply chains work do you?"

If Ukraine wants to do damage it would take out part of a bridge used for bringing in supplies to Crimea from Russia. If NATO wanted to destroy the bridge, it would have be bombed it so that nothing was left of the bridge on either shoreline, meaning it would take decades to rebuild, not a year.

"Putting F-22 raptors would prompt a nuclear escalation, then who will be shitting their pants?"

lol, If Russia launches nukes at the US, Moscow will instantly cease to exist. Both countries have enough power to destroy the world several times over. If Putin wants to be the man that nuked the US and thus the United States launches 3,750 weapons at Russia, all at once, from missile silos, war ships, and nuclear submarines, and wants Moscow and every other populated city in Russia to no longer exists, go right ahead.

Rationale actors know better than to launch nukes. If Russia does that, Russia will be destroyed. I am guessing Putin does not want his legacy to be the guy who destroyed Russia.

Needless to say, no one in the US is shitting in their pants when Russia attempts nuclear escalation.

Not too sure how many members of the Nazis, NeoNazis, or White Supremisists are jews but that could be due to my own ignorance or the preposterous concept. We all get to have out own opinions. Meanwhile there are many bridges to be mended between the Russians and Ukranians, could be in bad taste due to the Crimea incident but I am not famous for my political correctness.

Russian troops aren't performing badly, they have finished and now holding the referendum for the 3/4 regions that they won. Western media won't admit that, so they brainwash, lie, and try.

Zelensky is a terrorist, modern day Hitler. Prodding and poking, provoking, getting other nations involved.

I hope you'll realize that Putin is an intelligent, fair and calm man, and he is our only chance left against the big bad evil USA, their aggressive, bullying foreign policy and their proxy colonization and expansion.

/u/derpy88 · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

You are 3/4 correct. I have been "awake" to the western media, better yet all corporate medias' lies for over two decades since Building 7 collapsed at free fall speed due to less, or even approximately half, for the shills who peddle the lie, of the building containing office fires. Larry Silverstein admits on live TV the same day that he and the FDNY decided the loss was too great and they decided to "pull the building." Also how did BBC know 25 minutes before the building fell, it was going to fall? The world had literally NEVER lost a building with steel structure/columns to fire at that point of time. So happens 2 more fell that day. What a cowinkydink. They have some world class engineers over at the BBC, I suppose. I won't even get into all the FDNY statements that aired live on 9-11 that all spoke of massive explosions in and below the lobbies of the Twin Towers. Lastly, if you still don't believe me...Tell me why the S.S. ( the SS, can't make this shit up) didn't IMMEDIATELY rush Mr. August (George) Busch* Jr. out of the middle school in Florida that day when his daily agenda had been posted publicly for over a week? There were planes that were still unaccounted for in the air for nearly 2.5 hours after the first tower was struck. I guess they just had great instincts the President was in zero danger that day. He stuck around until late that afternoon and updated the nation from the same school's Gymnasium. Fucking Hell SS, you guys rock! Not only are you all amazing bodyguards, I mean just look at Kennedy FFS, you all are psychic too. Well, except for JFK and Regan, clearly you lost your powers momentarily those few minutes. I'm also going to side with the 4k pilots and CFI's who produce unequivocal evidence that the story that day is scientifically, a 100% impossibility, not just a report (NIST) that says, because we say so. Same goes for the structural engineers who had many dust samples tested from Ground Zero that show the presence of Nano-Thermite was involved that day. What does NIST respond with years later? Well, ya know... that is Classified Information but we can tell you samples were stored in the Twin Towers. I'm sure the Insurance companies didn't mind that at all. No, seriously, Silverstein had just upped the Insurance policies by nearly 3x two weeks before. Another winkydink that day. Some may even call that "a clue!" You can even see in some media footage some of the columns from the ground are broken at an even 45 degree angle. Pretty amazing considering everything above them was pulverized to dust that day including, furniture, electronics, bodies, etc. It even left pouring lava (molten steel) running like a channel under the debris for over 4 weeks after the wreck. Damn that Jet fuel burns hot...wait.

Time to light one up to that. It's been years since I have tapped into my old research days, but you can go verify every point I make. At least you could 10-15 years ago on YT. Prob all down the memory hole now for some crazy reason lol. Isn't it just weird that no true tech company has rivaled YT except a Chinese company that makes videos less than a minute or so long. Why is the length allowed important? What can you learn in one minute or so? How people are still sleep walking in a world where the truth is literally out there in a database on your desk or bed and we decide to turn a blind eye will potentially be the largest mistake this era of man has ever made. We let a world with unlimited potential slip right thru our fingertips and it is exactly what TPTB wanted us to do. Such fools. They even convinced 80% that the 20% were complete whack jobs for thinking it. It's actually dumbfoundingly brilliant. The bottom line is that it goes like this. If you stay in a position of power (or alive) for longer than 4 years, you are either part of the problem or allowed to be there. There is NO SUCH THING as independent or elected positions of high power. You are SELECTED (almost always Blackmailed, Bribed, family threatened etc.) Putin plays a role just like Biden and Zelenskyy do. Does he always play by their rules? I think he did until Trump started meeting with him in private. I don't believe I need to tell you how much Former POTUS Trump was hated by the TPTB...just watch any new program to this day from the minute he announced his running. Now, back to VP. The precise moment he was blackballed? My guess is when he was uninvited to the G-13 or right around then. I can only tell you that there are literally hundreds of cell phone videos of Russian soldiers in Ukraine feeding and clothing many fo the displaced people of Ukraine and not blowing them to pieces as we are told. Ethnic Russian people have been murdered by the 10's of 1000's, mainly by the hands of the Azov Batt. and other White Nationalist groups in The Eastern portion of Ukraine for decades and Putin finally put his foot down. Or possibly a plan between white hats that are defending the world from the Tyrants that want utter and outright control. Maybe it's all a psyop after all. Only time will tell and it's very tight lipped. But there is 0 doubt in my mind a war of good vs. evil is afoot since 2015 or so and we are alive to watch it play out. In closing, most important thing to always remember and a good objective rule of thumb is this... NOBODY is Independent with power, control or influence. Anyone who tells you different are as fake as WU transfers and $5k prepaid debit cards for $200 on a marketplace that my 6 year old could design. Cheers, now pass me the lighter.

after 8 years of bombardment and attempted ethnic cleansing, it's unlikely that the Donbass Russians (who've been there since the 1700s btw), needed "re-education", except how to defend their families from a psychotic Ukrainian state.

I love the Russian victim hood. It's the same playbook Hitler used, provoke your enemy and when they say they need to be prepared to defend against the enemy massing across from their border, you attack them and claim you had to defend your country. Very Hitler-esk.

I am not sure if you actually read the article, but I don't think it means what you think it means.

Preemptive steps are crucial to deterrence, Zelensky said. He cautioned against “waiting for the nuclear strikes first.”

The Ukrainian president’s press secretary, Sergii Nykyforov, later clarified Zelensky’s comments after some media interpreted the suggestion to include preemptive nuclear strikes, rather than nonnuclear steps like sanctions.

“You will never hear such calls from Ukraine,” Nykyforov said in a translated Facebook post, asserting that only Russia would resort to “blackmail the world” with nuclear threats.

The Russian logic in "needing" to attack is even more rediculous than Bush's BS excuse that the US had to invade Iraq to remove their weapons of mass destruction; however, Saddam acted like he still had weapons of mass destruction in an attempt to deter an Iranian invasion. Putin knows that Ukraine has no nuclear weapons. Saddam knew Iran was a real threat, as the Iraq army was literally over run by unarmed Iranian suicide children in the Iran-Iraq war, so claiming you have weapons of mass destruction does not sound illogical, if you are afraid unarmed children being used as cannon fodder could literally over run your army again.

Meanwhile, Zelensky was asking other nations to not wait until after a nuclear war had already started to intervene. Honestly, Zelensky sounds like a pretty rationale actor to me. Asking for other nations to help prevent Russia from starting a nuclear war, that sounds like a very logical and sane thing in my opinion.

This is the problem with the Russia propaganda, it spoon feeds narratives to the point that people post articles thinking it helps their argument when it actuality it fundamentally undermines the very argument they are trying to make.

As in losing the ground that Putin illegally annexed into Russia by forcing residents to vote at gun point?

"Zelensky is a terrorist, modern day Hitler. Prodding and poking, provoking, getting other nations involved."

Which country attacked which country? Putin is using the exact same logic as the Nazis did, the "we are the victims so we need to attack our neighbors first" rationale. lol

"I hope you'll realize that Putin is an intelligent, fair and calm man, and he is our only chance left against the big bad evil USA, their aggressive, bullying foreign policy and their proxy colonization and expansion."

If you mean the USA stands up for democracy, guilty as charged. I hope you guys in Russia eventually get free elections where the ballot boxes are not proactively stuffed full of ballots before the polls open.

Russia's internal and external affairs is its own business. Check how many sovereign nations the USA has invaded in the last decade.

This 'war' is mainly about US imperialism, as well as being a scapegoat for western inflation caused by excessive quantitative easing (money printing) in order to prop up the failing house of cards. Oh and gov level money laundering too in the name of 'aid' and 'defense packages'.

Disclaimer: I'm not in Russia nor Russian

Sorry in advance for the noobie question but what exactly is POW?

/u/newbieforever2018 ☆Cares About Noobs☆ · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

Prisoners of war. We are in discussions with the DDOSers for a prisoner swap that will end this.

/u/GOUPIL · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

he said he was a newbie lol

you have no heart haha

/u/newbieforever2018 ☆Cares About Noobs☆ · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

The thing about evil is that you can't grant it a home. You must vent it out at every opportunity.

/u/Hungry_Eyes · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

POW == Proof of Work, a concept where two computers in contact have to solve small equations to stay in contact, as I understand. Basically eliminates the current kind of DDoS attacks.

/u/Hungry_Eyes · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

Well, at the least the poster apologized for the "noobie question". I figure a real answer was merited in this instance. Plus i"m bored as all Hell. 8-D

You were in the right. I was trying to have fun rather than being helpful and POW did that backfire on me!

NSA and GCHQ are working overtime this weekend.

Our problems are the result.

/u/capobianco · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

It must be hard to control a bunch of brainless morons, so much money wasted on some useless stuff like this.

I might have a good idea of who these DDOSERS are but I can never point fingers until I am certain

/u/GOUPIL · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

any people think it is LE... In my opinion i don't know...

What's your idea? i know it's not a 100% throw

/u/capobianco · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

Not LE because they have no reason to while there are far worse things than a forum they can use to derive information from. I suspect it's a group within TOR that just happens to hate Dread for whatever reason.

/u/GOUPIL · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

Seriously? just because they don't like Dread, i can't see them spend such a fucking huge amount of money...

This DDOS is particularly insane if i don't say bullshit

/u/capobianco · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

This DDOS, expensive? This would be pocket money for them, and they're probably getting paid by other organizations that profit from people migrating to those services when Dread's being faulty. From all attacking perspectives, it's a win-win

/u/GOUPIL · 2 votes · 3 months ago · Link

yes there is no fair competency here...

But seriously zero of my onion links works, i have the feeling this is serious DDOS.

But i don't know much things about DDOS

/u/thyme77 · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

Holy shit, this is getting out of control now.

/u/Haroba · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

Hello /u/Paris,

Thank you for your work to keep Dread up and stable. Besides using the tools provided by Toralf, have you configured anything else on your guard nodes to help alleviate the attacks? On my relays, I struggle to keep them up afloat, even with heavy config modification.

I think it would be best if somehow we created a centralized repository of information needed to successfully run tor relays under heavy load, because there doesn't seem to be a lot of great resources out there for a full-stack solution. If we are able to lower the barrier of entry to running guard nodes it may incentivize the community to help stabilize the tor network.

/u/mgambino · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

Dread ought have a window featuring the forum's i2p address pop-up upon user login for users who are able to login occasionally -- to make more people aware it exists and that it's running flawlessly with zero downtime.

/u/mgambino · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

I am surprised more people are not using the i2p link. Tor.taxi, dnm.watch etc should link to it as it runs flawlessly w zero downtime.

/u/GOUPIL · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

i2p is very new and need a vpn, i suppose people are not ready

/u/frankiejwatts · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

honestly just makes me think why would people ddos dread i mean i get ddosing cp sites but dread it just doesnt make any sence anyways hope you find a way to stop the ddos attacks thankfull for all the shit youve done for me and for everyone truly the only site like this

/u/drrabada · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

the only scenario that makes sense to me is if a market is exit scamming, launching a ddos attack to prevent the news from spreading but that's not always the case

/u/SmokeyKiller · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

hmm could be but i dont think any main market would exit scam but then again markets in the past have exit scammed and big ones

/u/asfaleia · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

You say that behind the DDOS attacks are "Either that or Russia and Iran." Can you elaborate more please /u/Paris how do you know it is those two countries?

Also POW is something long time awaited. Hopefully coming soon.

/u/yamamoto · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

there are currently civil conflicts in russia and iran which means that there will be an influx of users from those countries trying to bypass censorship.

/u/asfaleia · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

Are there any enough significant groups on Dread discussing their situation in Russia and Iran that would trigger those countries to sustain an attack on Dread? I am not aware of any.

According to our (Asfaleia) insight into complex geopolitical situation there are other candidates that can be much more willing to disrupt the Dread than Russia and Iran.

It is just an interesting selection of countries that are believed to be behind the attack on Dread - both countries, Russia and Iran, are on the top sanction list of the USA ^^

/u/yamamoto · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

it's not about attacking dread, it's the influx of Tor users in general that's disrupting the network. it's not a malicious action rather just an influx of users.

there absolutely is an attack on Tor and Dread going on, but in terms of what the OP meant about Iran and Russia it's not an attack.

The tor network in general is overloaded today, I get this starting my tor service:

Guard as212520 ($721A251658BA2240EED110C078334AB2DF6C309C) is failing more circuits than usual. Most likely this means the Tor network is overloaded. Success counts are 111/170. Use counts are 68/69. 136 circuits completed, 0 were unusable, 25 collapsed, and 7 timed out. For reference, your timeout cutoff is 176 seconds.

/u/QueenUniverse · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

Yeah I was wondering why I couldn't access dread nowadays. But here we are.

Who the fuck would even do this DDOS? What's the point? Am I missing something?

Not a public one. If you are a premium member there is one available.

/u/Shakybeats M · 1 votes · 3 months ago · Link

When we can better mitigate the attacks. If we post a public one it will be attacked.
