burner laptop

by /u/oldthug · 1 votes · 1 week ago

Just bought a burner laptop today from eBay. Is there anything I should do before setting it up with my carding setup? Anything I need to configure on the hardware level to help protect me or am I good to go? Just want a little peace of mind if anybody has any thanks in advance

Upgrade the BIOS/UEFI.

Disable the camera.

Disable Bluetooth.

Set a password on the BIOS/UEFI.

Install the operating system of your choice, encrypting the hard drive.

Appreciate the reply, I'll look into the bios/uefi stuff seeing I am not too proficient in that. Side question if you're still online: it's alright that I bought this with my regular eBay account correct? Not planning on being a vendor or anything and will likely have this for only a couple months.

You're totally fine. You look on the back for the model number. Go to the manufacture's website. Look under Drivers & Downloads. Get the latest BIOS/UEFI download. Upgrade it. Decide what Operating System you want to load on it. You're good to go.

also note how easy it is to pull the cmos battery i managed to forget one and the laptop i used is an absolute pain in the zorch to pull the cmos batt to reset the password. (just sayin...)

i would do a full wipe, then install of OS

On modern laptops, they make it harder with the CMOS battery lift. On fancy models they're using jumpers. The pain is taking everything apart to get to it. On high models ThinkPads the UEFI detects CMOS tampering.

I, personally, would definitely do a full wipe and re-installation on my own.

Bought? Doesnt everyone have a stack of old laptops lying around?

Strictly in reference to the device itself, I see no reason why the laptop itself couldn't be tracked down.

A record may exist of who bought it originally. Heck the buyer may have even sent in the warranty registration card and mailed it back in. Feds determine this.

So feds go to original buyer, and determine maybe he is one who sold it on eBay. Maybe he was only prior owner. He will know who he sold it to on eBay as he shipped it to that person.

If you were the recipient, then there it is.

You bough it on ebay with your real name and paid for it with your real bank account sent to your real address? Why not to reserve it in a shop with a burner email, get there with hat and covid mask (forever available option now), pay in cash and be happy?

Anyway, why would you use a gadget like smart phone in the first place? It is a perfect surveillance station (this is its basic purpose) you carry with you at all times, packed with all surveillance sensors available in the universe. Most of the attached-always-on sensors wont be used for the job you describe anyway. Or do you plan to use accelerometer or microphone for carding?? What about magnetometer for carding? Do you use that? If not, why the fuck are you carrying those sensors with you??

If you think you fuck with it by physically disassembling of all unnecessary sensors from it, install GrapheneOS, set it up for Tor only usage, get ready to get busted once LE touches such phone. It will be immediately obvious that this phone is not a normal phone and you get into trouble. With such a phone in hands they get warrant for anything easily from the judge and they find the shit even if you washed your house with chlorine.

Think twice.
