Dread now vs. pre DDOS days

by /u/captainsensible · 4 votes · 2 weeks ago

Dread newbie here but I'm just curious - how does Dread usage today compare to the pre DDOS days? I get the sense that the DDOS attacks have had their desired effect (i.e. previous regular Dread users gave up trying to access Dread due to DDOS attacks) but it appears that the amount of daily /d/all posting activity is starting to ramp up? I'm sure Paris and HugBunter collect Daily/Weekly/Monthly Access User data that cannot be shared for obvious OpSec reasons

IMO not spending at least 5 mins on dread before going to market to spend coin is a mistake. Ive seen many "damn wish I checked dread first" posts.

Im sure there are many more on here that never log in or comment. I only ever lurked in reddit days.

the info here on any given day is invaluable

Thanks admins and mods

We don't collect specific traffic or log in data, so anything we can base it off would be user activity such as posts, comments. There have been much higher periods of traffic in the past, things are starting to improve again as you have noticed. Despite the attacks, Dread has had over 28k new user accounts over the last 2 months.

Right now, things will be slow overall in comparison, give it 1-2 months and we'll have our usual growth again.

Is there any reason why Dread doesn't or can't have a rotational mirror like many markets do? Seems like a good way to keep up time even if the main link is down.

We try to avoid mirrors wherever possible, there are multiple issues involved for us as a forum having mirrors that will be disused in the future, problems that markets would not face. It also increases the risk of phishing. The current private links have survived even through attacks as they have assisted with spreading the scale of the attack between the main mirror and themselves too.

With that being said, we were working on a plan for mirror rotation and would have implemented it into the tier system within Daunt, that was until we discovered a method to overcome the current bottleneck and be able to outscale the attack further, the main link is now currently extremely accessible, so it was worthwile in the end. It is a much more complex process for us to run mirror rotation, we can't use similar setups for it as markets do due to the complexities in our server cluster, its not so straight forward.

I use one of the private mirrors which (judging by the speed that purple man is walking) is not under severe DDOS attack compared to the main link. Thanks to all that you and Paris do I have very successfully navigated DNM purchases without incident :-)

I always appreciate that the main link that I have had for the longest time now is still good when dread is up.

Fair enough, I was mainly just curious. I use a private mirror and have had no issues. Looking forward to your future implementation though.

My general perception is that there was more activity pre DDoS, and over time it has started getting more activity post DDoS. But I am not sure that the DDoS attackers motive was to minimize user activity. Or at least that would be news to me.

I'd given up on getting access last year, forgot my login details in the process and now just rejoined. Being an on and off user since nearly the beginning, it seems much quieter now than usual. A shame as I always found Dread a great resource. Hopefully in the coming months, Dread will return to it's former glory

It's definitely been quieter, but users will return with time

Dread is still booming and it'll get only get better. We just need more HQ post.

The DDOS attacks have affected the entire dark-net scene, not just Dread. All markets and services have also been severely affected. This has probably led people to look for alternatives. When everyone realizes that everything is working as usual, the dark net will bloom again.
