How do i know that i'm on the real dread?

by /u/JustaPerspective · 4 votes · 6 days ago

Hey ganggg.

-So i use tor.taxi to get the links to dread, and now that i've logged in, how can i know if i'm in the OG version and not some phishing site?

-Also, after upgrading to Tails 5.3.1, i can see like one or two error lines in the code that pops up when I just start tails. It goes so fast that i can't even really read what that error is. Is this common?

-It would be awesome if you could tell me ways to ensure that my tails has not been compromised, such as visible red flags etc

Much luvvv

If my canary is expired then you're in the right place.

On a serious note, if the onion begins with "dready" - "to" - "fatropts" then it is legit.

/u/9nyx · 2 votes · 6 days ago · Link

I'm always dready to fatropts for sure!

/u/Solar M · 2 votes · 6 days ago · Link

really that seems like something a fake dread page would actually fuck up by forging your canary and it being up to date

/u/TTTz P · 2 votes · 6 days ago · Link

I always verify by seeing fat bet on cox n brad in the link

Would be great if you could point me to some links to learn about dread history and how it all started and who all run it now so that i can become a more cultured cunt

I'll probably do something like that for the 5 year Dread Birthday, half a decade is a huge milestone, still some time away yet (February 15th 2023), but I've got a lot in store leading up to that any way.

or "dread" - "too" - "big" :p

/u/Spooky · 2 votes · 6 days ago · Link

You have to think deeper than that. How do you know that it is really YOU that is on the dark web right now looking at what could be the real or fake dread? Or maybe none of this is happening and none of this even exists? Maybe you're just dreaming? Or maybe you're not dreaming because again none of this is real or actually happening?

...Okay I'm done now.

It sucks that nobody has been straight with you yet.

On the bottom footer you'll find the "canary".

Take /u/Paris's signed message along with his PGP and verify the message.

The message itself contains Dread's Main URL.

IF that message is validated and verified to be authentic then the contents are indicative that the URL in the message and the URL of your browser (being one and the same) signifies that you are in fact at Dread proper.

Remember, you need both pieces of information. The message and the PGP itself (import the PGP, of course).

/u/JustaPerspective 📢 OP · 1 votes · 5 days ago · Link

So basically, I've to add Paris' PGP to my keyring and then verify his message from 'canary', if i get a good signature, then i'm on the OG Dread, right?

/u/HeadJanitor · 1 votes · 5 days ago · Link

Exactly.

This is what you should get.

Oh boi... The deeper you peel the onion the more you realise the dark web is nothing but just a big phishing net :)

/u/JustaPerspective 📢 OP · 1 votes · 5 days ago · Link

That's why i always grate onions instead of peeling them

I also get those same error codes every time I boot Tails I'm pretty sure! But I've had them for quite a while before the newest update I think. I'd have to restart Tails rq to check I'm still getting them, but it's been happening for a while. I'm not too concerned because Tails is working for me as usual as it always has. So I choose to ignore it ;)

If anyone could shed light on that, that'd be nice to have peace of mind on though ngl.

As far as phishing is concerned. This most definitely isn't all one big elaborate hoax and I'm certainly not in the process of stealing your information and monero as we speak. This is definitely all real! Trust. Source: me

I honestly have wondered the same thing and still don't know entirely what links I should be wary of yet, but I don't think Dread is one of them. I think Dread is safe from phishing because it's not really a target for phishers because it's not a place where you exchange money for something. It's just a forum. From what I can tell, phishers only rtypically ecreate market links because they can trick people into giving their wallet details, but not too many deals go down on Dread and there's no wallet for the website. I'm probably oversimplifiying or even just getting the details wrong but I think that's the jist of it. I've been curious about the same thing for a while as well, so some clarification from someone experienced would be nice! I can confirm it's real just because I've been on here for a while and I feel I'd have encountered something by now, like red flags or being phished or something, if this was a phishing site, but it's just a normal forum. *shrug*

/u/HeadJanitor has eplained how to verify the links on the comment above, you should check it out!

Also you're right, it's not likely that anybody would want to hack my dread account hehe, but i feel like we ask really vulnerable and incriminating questions here so i just want to understand it as best as i can. :)

But for the error messages and tails red flags, there's been no response. Ig everybody is as dumb as me :(

/u/HeadJanitor · 1 votes · 5 days ago · Link

See if you can take a screenshot of the red flags. Where and when do you see them?

/u/wWu6C442CU · 1 votes · 6 days ago · Link

You use more sites than just tor.taxi to find the dread link: Darknetlive. dark.direct. dark.fail.

If they're all in agreement, you're probably in the right place.

You then compare the PGP listed on Darknetlive to the one on /pgp.txt here on Dread. You then compare the sig on Darknetlive with the one on /mirrors.txt here on Dread. If they're identical, then you're probably in the right place.

And don't forget to import the PGP public key into your PC's PGP software, then verify the signature on /mirrors.txt.
