I am about to ask a vendor to send the refund amount to my XMR wallet.
Since they might want to scam me, how can I ensure that the vendor cannot lie about having sent me the money?

Hi, easy, wait for the amount to have successfully reached your wallet with 10+ confirmation from the Monero (XMR) blockchain.
Don't trust anyone else nor any explorer, they don't work with XMR. TRUST YOUR WALLET

Set up a new address for your wallet just for that refund. You can add labels to your addresses in official XMR wallets so that's always helpful for organization. Moreover, not sure about the GUI wallet, but the CLI always adds an extra tag to each address when it's used.
Once the vendor notes on cempleting the refund transfer refresh your wallet and check for incoming transactions. Be sure to never reuse your deposit addresses.

You can trace the amount send by the vendor on XMR blockchain.
Just use your public + secret key to do so ( guessing you are the wallet's owner )
