When will dread be stable again?? i definitely miss the old days, right now we have little interaction due to the unstable nature of dread right now, I remember how i will spend hours on dread reading comments and posts, very entertaining and educative.

The old internet in general is dead. If we aren't careful we'll have Elon musks monitized hellscape
Anyway, How's your 30s treating you?

I miss the era where starscream999 and sinster6 was around :(
Fun times, I'd come home just to see what's happening with those two
/u/uknowndread000 · 2 votes · 1 month ago · Link
That time starscream openly admitted to snitching on his friend and then getting shitted on here was hilarious.

If you're using the mirror off daunt it's unstable. You gotta get a different one. Mine works every time

Honestly Dread has been working flawlessly for me since they relaunched. It's faster and more stable than ever on my end.
/u/skeletalrose · 6 votes · 1 month ago · Link
Dread has been stable for me as well, using private mirror.
/u/m00nkey P · 1 votes · 1 month ago · Link
Agreed, /u/Paris is working hardly like in a cotton field in the early 1500! so it's more stable for sure
/u/Dready_To_Fat · 1 votes · 1 month ago · Link

/u/m00nkey P · 4 votes · 1 month ago · Link

/u/Dready_To_Fat · 1 votes · 1 month ago · Link

/u/m00nkey P · 2 votes · 1 month ago · Link
No way that I've hard feeling, lol. People usually kiss ass without a reason. In this case, if I'm kissing this ass, at least there's a good reason that anyone can see. Lol. Just recognizing the hard work :)

I think it is stable again now. Or I'm mistaken? I couldn't enter for months
/u/numberTwo P · 2 votes · 1 month ago · Link
That wasn't stability issues, they pulled the whole thing offline.
/u/opiumlover72 · 1 votes · 1 month ago · Link
Yeah I know, why was that? DDoS attacks?

Hug explained it well in the welcome back to Dread post. /post/f9a3e8d34c660f42101b
We had hoped to use the time to focus on fixing some poor design decisions in Dread's main code. However do to our simplification of how much work would actually need to be done we realized how much we missed in the process when we were working in it. That isn't to say we haven't improved many things in the back end which allows us to keep things performant for longer but overall dread will need a full rewrite and database system redesign. At the same time we were organizing Daunt and making needed changes on that front. Completely burning and rebuilding the cluster design was a large job which ran into various issues we didn't expect either. We had hoped to be down for just a week or so. But it turned into another and then a month and then a few months. Things didn't go as planned.
It takes time. Hug and I are the most overworked admins on the darknet. I've been working every single day to get the main Dread URL online as much as possible without needing to run and organize many different mirrors. Going as far as developing an improved onionbalance process built from a fork of gobalance which is the single main reason why Dread is even online right now. That with the improvements to endgame and a customized vanguard system for fronts (which has an army of high powered and optimized relays on the network handling the DDOS traffic). People's heads blow when I tell them everything we are doing to get uptime. There is nothing else left I could do other than wait for POW and burn money.

Can't say I understand any of this, but I hope you guys know how much it is appreciated. You guys work yourselves to the bone to keep this place going for us, I think I can speak for all of us here by saying; we are forever indebted to you guys for what you've done here. Disgruntled and ignorant individuals will always be the loudest voices in the crowd, but we truly appreciate you guys.
I know for a fact you guys have saved lives, kept people safe, and created an unstoppable movement. Not many can say that. You could retire right now and would have done enough. Please do not work yourself to failure, we don't even deserve Paris operating at 10% never mind 110%.

Wow. Im impressed.
More than all about gobalance and custom vanguard system.
Great job btw.
Im worried about the POW, don't seems to be so close as expected.
/u/Shakybeats M · 2 votes · 1 month ago · Link
I think people thought it was closer than it was. It's on it's way, but fixing a fundamental design in the tor network is not an easy thing. Before they were putting almost no resources into solving the ddos problem. They are finally now working on the problem. Getting it stable, and making sure it is working correctly will take a few months to accomplish. I think some people were expecting it to be out any day. In reality it probably is still months away.

/u/DarkBet · 1 votes · 3 weeks ago · Link
Just curious, and I know theres a high chance you can't answer this question, but how much does it cost a month to run this site? I won't get into any specifics about how many servers etc.. but I'm just interested in the backend of what it takes to make a site like this work. Thanks for the work you put in.
/u/Paris A · 1 votes · 3 weeks ago · Link
It costs tens of thousands a month. Mostly because I am running a literal army of relays on the Tor network to protect the fronts and core servers. After the DDOS finishes these costs will greatly decrease if we need them to but I will probably keep these relays running for much longer.
/u/DarkBet · 1 votes · 3 weeks ago · Link
Wow that is steep. And you pay for that all from ads and donations? or do you fund this partially as a donation to the community?
/u/Paris A · 1 votes · 3 weeks ago · Link
The bulk of it comes from ads and donations. Unlike what most people think all funds paid to dread gets basically spent on dread or something close to dread (like the bounties for endgame). At times both me and hug have needed to push funds into dread to keep things working.
/u/numberTwo P · 2 votes · 1 month ago · Link
DDoS attacks, which resulted in a decent time for Hug and Paris to work on the back-end, thus having to shut it down. There were lots of delays though, they didn't think it would take as long as it did.

Thanks for the information. Glad they can fixed!! Applauses for them.

Since dread came back, have you recreated a new account, or are you still able to log in with the old account?
