Still Under DDOS, but here is a status update anyway. The Tor network is breaking.

Latest Update for Tor Browser on Android is broken - do NOT update

by /u/deerp Community Watch · 1 votes · 1 week ago

Latest Tor Browser update on Fdroid is 102.2.1 build 11.5.9

I updated it and attempted to click connect. It instantly crashed every single time. Here is the logcat report for the crash -

java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to start service org.torproject.android.service.TorService@d2775ca with Intent { act=org.torproject.android.intent.action.STATUS cmp=org.torproject.torbrowser/org.torproject.android.service.TorService }: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: org.torproject.torbrowser: Targeting S+ (version 31 and above) requires that one of FLAG_IMMUTABLE or FLAG_MUTABLE be specified when creating a PendingIntent.

Strongly consider using FLAG_IMMUTABLE, only use FLAG_MUTABLE if some functionality depends on the PendingIntent being mutable, e.g. if it needs to be used with inline replies or bubbles.

Words fail me how this update was uploaded in the first place. Before this update Tor Browser only targeted API 30 (android 11) and this new update they just changed the target OS to API 31 or Android 12 without making any checks to see if Tor Browser is actually compatible with it or not. If they checked they would get the instant crash.

Here the report in gitlab where they have admitted the latest update is utterly broke and have ceased production of it and no longer uploading it anywhere - https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/applications/tor-browser/-/issues/41481

So if you're an Android user and use Tor Browser, the latest update that works is 102.2.21 build 11.5.8. If you use Fdroid, you can choose which update to download. If you've installed it from Play Store, well you're out of luck as you cannot downgrade to previous build in Play Store and will have to resort to using an APK site to downgrade.

is Android secure at the first place?

/u/deerp Community Watch OP · 1 votes · 4 days ago · Link

It can be if you use Grapheneos but the general answer is no, android is not particularly safe due to Google. If this question was in relation to Tor Browser, it has more uses than just accessing dread and darknet markets. I only use Tor on Android to access sites such as Library of Trantor which is a fantastic free service to download ebooks which comes in very useful when you have long journeys ahead of you.
