After YEARS of waiting. It's finally merged.
https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/core/tor/-/merge_requests/702
Tor introduction POW is now merged. It will take a month or two to get it really on the network at large (with enough clients and relays using it). It's a massive code submit so there will probably be some issues that will need to be patched. But finally the time is really about over for all these attacks. This with the new EndGame v3 will make DDOS attacks on the Tor network far harder to do.
FUCK YA

DDOS dude gonna be eating cat food assuming it isn't just the feds
/u/newbieforever2018 is not a newbie! · 1 votes · 2 weeks ago · Link
Tuna got expensive so tonight cat food is on the menu.
/u/[deleted] · 2 votes · 2 weeks ago · Link
cat food with the inflation? better eat those insects waiting behind big ass trash cans
/u/newbieforever2018 is not a newbie! · 1 votes · 2 weeks ago · Link
It probably will come to that at some point. Already insects are sold in marketplaces of some countries. Many are high in protein but everyone should be aware that eating an ant is very different from eating an aunt.
/u/[deleted] · 1 votes · 2 weeks ago · Link
Why not both, aunt for water and ants for protein :) Thanks for the idea!
/u/newbieforever2018 is not a newbie! · 1 votes · 2 weeks ago · Link
But she is fam, bro. We don't do that.

Hats off to all you hard working hackers/coders/programmers :-)
/u/NIGGERLyncher9000 · 2 votes · 2 weeks ago · Link
When it merges, will it put Dread offline until it finishes installing? and if so, for how long?
/u/Shakybeats M Modinator · 1 votes · 2 weeks ago · Link
No. It's not something we install. The relays will get updated with it.

It is something we will install. I will refresh all fronts, guards, and relays with the new Tor patch. Then I will focus on getting POW working on the new gobalance.
To be clear it's a configuration option you need to enable in the torrc on the onion service. If you don't enable it, you won't have the protection right away.
/u/lagged_expletive · 1 votes · 2 weeks ago · Link
When are we to enable it?
/u/Paris A

When there is enough client and service use on the Tor network. It could be a month or two down the road when POW is pushed to the stable branch.
/u/Wodra3000 · 1 votes · 2 weeks ago · Link
So we all have to wait until the whole TOR network get patched... So day by day new nodes get the patch.
Is it rolled out via automatic update? (sry, I'm new)

Big news
/u/Solar M · 1 votes · 2 weeks ago · Link
very excited
this is great news and we have waited far too long
not to mention all the donations from markets and vendors to the tor project
seems like they did not care until it started to take down the network itself
either way i am very happy right now and meeting with all the dnm mods in Belize for the big party
message shaky for an invite

"Donations from markets and vendors to the tor project"
Allegedly right? Tor is about anonymity, It's about peace and love, nothing illegal related lol
/u/godhatesfeds · 3 votes · 2 weeks ago · Link
Tor was created by the largest criminal organization in the world, I doubt they're worried about where its money comes from

some good news!
/u/gofish P · 1 votes · 2 weeks ago · Link
Excellent news! Tor seems faster and more responsive than ever before, or is that just me?
This should greatly slow down attacks. Is there any reason for I2P now?
/u/Bittern · 1 votes · 2 weeks ago · Link
Tor still isn't decentralized as much as I2P and it's not wise to put all your eggs in 1 basket as there may be bugs in the PoW implementation that could lead to DDoS attacks.

As DeSnake said always: "Never rely on a single security layer!"
And: I think to have both is good. When both networks compete, all users win.

to repeat. Great news.........
/u/Wodra3000 · 1 votes · 2 weeks ago · Link
Why is this a game changer?
Is it, because each TOR User has to calculate a hash to reach a tor hidden site and this takes time?
/u/Paris A

It puts the compute on the attacker side and prevents a single front from being completely fucked right away.

Ahh, like, back in the days, the idea of the spam prevention to use in email.

/u/GOUPIL · 1 votes · 2 weeks ago · Link
Can someone explain me in details how it can reduce the power of DDos atacks with the POW?
/u/HugBunter A · 1 votes · 2 weeks ago · Link
Introduce requests will require computationally expensive solving of cryptographical puzzles from the connecting client, which means ever request an attacker would send would overload his servers as it tries to process the puzzle solving. It would require EXTREMELY expensive resources at a large scale to be able to conduct any sort of attack that will do any damage to the end target.
/u/GOUPIL · 1 votes · 2 weeks ago · Link
thank you for the answer HugBunter
/u/TorDotFish · 1 votes · 2 weeks ago · Link
Excellent news. We hear so often how markets are desperately struggling against large scale DDOS attacks and ransom demands. Hopefully that era will soon be over.
/u/howyagoin101 · 1 votes · 2 weeks ago · Link
Fuck me they took enough time lol.
